About CompuSavvy

CompuSavvy is a computer training company located in Los Angeles. We provide on-site software training and computer classes in major cities throughout California for lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries, word processors, accountants, and other professionals. We have been offering these services for more than 15 years.

We specialize in MS Word® and WordPerfect®, but also offer training in a wide variety of other programs widely used in law firms and government agencies, as well as computer literacy for legal professionals (and for older adults). Our trainers all have more than 20 years' experience as legal word processors and/or legal secretaries and, as a result, have special expertise in formatting legal documents. All of our trainers are patient, knowledgeable, and flexible.

Whether we train your staff at your office or in a classroom, we customize the training to meet your particular needs. As part of the training package, each student receives numerous handouts that provide easy step-by-step instructions.

We also provide legal word processing services on a temporary basis (long-term or short-term assignments). Our temps. are fluent in both Word and WordPerfect, as well as Excel and PowerPoint (plus the advanced features of Adobe Acrobat), and also have vast experience with transcription. They are known for both their fast turnaround (with typing speeds of 85 wpm and better) and their conscientious, high-quality work. Their dependability, "can-do" attitude, and commitment to customer service set them apart.

Jan Berinstein, the principal of CompuSavvy, has a B.A. in political science from UCLA and an M.A. and Ph.D. in government from Cornell University. In addition to providing software training services, she continues to work as a legal word processor for law firms in Southern California on a freelance basis. She also has extensive experience as a freelance writer and copy editor, and has a journalism certificate from UCLA Extension.

Ms. Berinstein has developed and taught computer classes for UCLA Extension (UNEX) , The University of West Los Angeles, The Center for Professional Education (CPE), and Learning Tree University. She has taught for UNEX since 1994 (she developed the popular "Computers and the Legal Environment" class that ran for approximately 10 years and currently teaches a series of "Computers for Adult Learners" classes for UNEX through The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). As the owner of CompuSavvy, she writes her own handouts and course manuals and does most of the training and teaching herself. However, she also collaborates with other expert trainers and consultants, some of whom write their own course materials.

Ms. Berinstein is the author of the popular books, Formatting Legal Documents With Microsoft Word 2010 and Formatting Legal Documents With Microsoft Office Word 2007, available on both Lulu.com and Amazon.com. At present, she is working on a book about troubleshooting Word documents as well as a compilation of the best posts from her Word & WordPerfect Tips blog (found at http://compusavvy.wordpress.com). In addition, she has written articles about legal technology for TechnoLawyer, the Legal IT Professionals web site (where she is a regular columnist), Legal Secretaries magazine, among others, and has co-authored and edited books about WordPerfect.
She is well known in the legal community. Her many talks and workshops include presentations for legal secretaries' groups, bar associations, and LegalTech Los Angeles.

She is the primary administrator and a moderator on the WordPerfect Universe web site , a user-to-user support site dealing with Corel WordPerfect® and the WordPerfect® Office suite, and an occasional contributor to the Word forum on Woody's Lounge .
